Throne Room - Temple of Utu
Temple of Utu was a collab between me and bro, Martin Holmberg. We talked about doing something together in our free time for a long time and the Throne Room challenge at Polycount was the perfect excuse for this. From the beginning, we set out to create a place that felt real and beliavable, but also that didn't take place on Earth. We had a very clear idea of what we wanted early on, which made the process much easier.
For the creation of this we used a bunch of different techniques, mixing uniquely mapped assets with trimsheets sculpted in Zbrush. It's really hard to pin point exactly who did what, in the end we touched each other's assets quite a bunch of times, really merging our styles together. We are really proud of how consistent the final piece turned out to be!
The contest had a lot of really good entries and we ended up getting the second place, which felt nice, for the first time I got prizes for making environments :P
We wrote a pretty detailed breakdown for 80.lv, which can be accessed here.
We don't have plans to release the assets anytime soon. I also worked a bit on a VR port of this, which is on hold now, due to me prioritizing other projects. But I gotta tell you, the first time I ran around this environment in VR I almost teared up a bit. The feeling of being able to interact with your own creations is something I had never experienced before and it really sold me on VR. Screenshots don't do justice to how epic it feels to be in this environment. Anyways, hopefully we can put something together one day and release as a demo.
